Why Are We So Hard On Fallen Child Stars?

Earlier this week, Corey Feldman appeared on Larry King Live to discuss the death of his friend Corey Haim, and in doing so, also brought up a good question: why is it okay to kick child stars when they’re down? Perhaps the saddest aspect of Haim’s death was the fact that it came as no surprise to anyone : Haim had long been on the storied Fallen Child Actor Path, a sad downward spiral often littered with drugs, depression, trouble with the law, and even suicide. And thanks to celebrity culture and our society’s collective nostalgia obsession, many of these fallen stars are unable to keep their personal struggles post-fame out of of the headlines: during his Larry King Live appearance, Feldman pointed out that “things like TMZ, outlets like that” make it okay for “society as a whole” to point and laugh at adults who can’t seem to outrun their child stardom days.

Is Drew Barrymore giving bisexuality a bad name?

Does Drew Barrymore deserve the Vanguard Award? 2010 has been pretty good to Drew Barrymore thus far. The birthday girl (yesterday was the big 35) has a major ad campaign as one of the faces of Cover Girl and she won both a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film for her portrayal of Little Edie in Grey Gardens. She also rekindled her relationship with actor Justin Long and just recently found out she would be awarded the Vanguard Award by GLAAD at an upcoming ceremony. The Vanguard Award goes to “media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.” GLAAD notes that Drew has done so by starring in Boys on the Side, from openly gay filmmaker Don Roos, producing He’s Just Not That Into You “in which she played a straight reporter at a LGBT newspaper who desperately seeks dating advice from her gay best friends” and playing the lesbian daughter of Robert de Niro in 2009’s Everybody’s Fine. Said Barrymore: I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay

The PhilmGuy’s DVD Review: ‘Nurse Jackie’; ‘The September Issue’

Nurse Jackie: Season One – Edie Falco finds gainful employment following her run on The Sopranos , as a take-no-prisoners NYC ER nurse who navigates a fast-paced medical world as she juggles it with her personal life. The Showtime drama lacks the pep of its colleagues, such as Dexter and The United States of Tara , but is worth watching for Falco’s commanding performances. The Blu-ray and DVD versions include the same extras, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary and stories from real life nurses. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant – A wannabe Harry Potter and Twilight , this slipshod fantasy about a traveling sideshow led by a brooding vampire (a slumming John C. Reilly ) misses most of its marks and succeeds only in making you wonder how the script was approved.
