By Susanna Negovan Photograph by Giuliano Bekor STRAIGHT A’S Oak Park native Kathy Griffin has name-dropped her way to Hollywood’s highest echelon. Kathy Griffin is facing an existential crisis: Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, the Bravo show that chronicles her exploits on the fringes of Hollywood, has lurched her onto fame’s fickle A-list. The success that eluded her for 20 years as a character actress and stand-up comedian has now earned her two Emmy Awards, sold-out national comedy tours, a best-selling memoir and a legion of fans. But what helps her fend off the cerebral calamity of fame is that her version of success is something of a parallel universe to the tabloid culture she follows. “To me, A-listers are people that just seem to have figured out how to have it all,” says Griffin when we meet in her hotel room on a Saturday afternoon; she is in Chicago for a series of comedy shows at the Chicago Theatre and is staying for a few extra days to visit friends from her school days at Oak Park and River Forest High School.
