Canada’s Olympic heroes not cashing in Canadians athletes had a magical fortnight in Vancouver with a smashing performance in the 2010 Olympics that produced a bevy of heroes. But more than three months after the Games, those gold medalists have been virtually invisible and it appears that their opportunity to capitalize on success has come and gone. So says two industry watchers, who note that Canadian medalists are not hawking products on television or adorning billboards throughout the country as one might expect. “I think there’s a window that’s gone,” said Anthony Abrahams, a principle with Vancouver firm Emblematica Brand Builders

Wrapping up a day in front of the cameras, Taylor Momsen was spotted leaving a photo shoot in New York City on Monday afternoon (June 21). Clad in a black tank top, above-the-knee stockings and black Doc Martens, the “Gossip Girl” actress was quite displeased to find photogs awaiting her exit – as she gave them the middle finger before disappearing in the crowded city streets. The sighting comes on the very same day in which Taylor’s band, The Pretty Reckless, released their 4-track EP on iTunes.

Madonna, Ellen DeGeneres distant cousins with Canadian roots

Two of America’s pop-culture icons — music superstar Madonna and TV powerhouse Ellen DeGeneres — are distant cousins with Canadian roots, according to the Toronto-based online genealogy service Ancestry.ca. Researchers have discovered that the two women are 11th cousins with a common “10th great-grandfather” — Martin Aucoin of France — whose daughters emigrated to Nova Scotia in the early 1600s. The daughters, Jeanne and Michele, were found to be matriarchs of French-Canadian clans that remained in this country for many generations. “DeGeneres’s family left Canada in the late 1700s when her fifth great-grandfather, Joseph Martin, relocated to Louisiana,” says Ancestry.ca. “It wasn’t until the late 1870s that Madonna’s second great-grandmother, Emilie Daniel, left Quebec” for Michigan, which the singer considers her home state. DeGeneres’ ancestors appear likely to have been victims of the 18th-century Acadian Expulsion, the British government’s forcible removal of tens of thousands of French-speaking residents of the Maritimes during the fall of New France.

Madonna and Ellen DeGeneres are 11th cousins, according to genealogy researchers at Ancestry.com.  Family history experts at Ancestry.com uncovered that the two entertainment powerhouses are related through a common 10th great-grandfather – a Frenchman named Martin Aucoin.
