On Wednesday, the couple began a whirlwind visit to Washington, DC, where they were first given a private tour of the White House, along with their 19-month-old children Emma and Max. Lopez and Anthony met with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and discussed education and the new Marc Anthony Scholarship Fund, which was set up to “fund Latino students who want to pursue higher education.” The celebrity couple met up again later in the evening with Obama at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual awards gala, where backstage before the president spoke, Obama led senators and members of congress in singing “Happy Birthday” to Anthony, who was honored at the event with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Lopez and Anthony were seated at the awards ceremony with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s black-tie gala comes around yearly at this time, but rarely with this kind of political and celebrity wattage. President Obama, who escorted first lady Michelle Obama, delivered the keynote remarks. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who smiled and kissed her way up the red carpet, was greeted with the passion and cellphone paparazzi usually reserved for, well, such divine beings as Jennifer Lopez, who accompanied her husband, Marc Anthony
